Lombok International Airport reopened on Thursday morning after being closed for more than a week due to volcanic activity at Mount Barujaru in West Nusa Tenggara.
Lombok airport spokesperson Gede Eka Sandi said the decision came after an evaluation by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and airline officials who reported that the weather was safe for flight operations.
He said that the Himawari satellite had shown the wind blowing toward the west, carrying the volcanic ash with it.
'Conditions have been deemed safe for flights at the airport. But we will keep monitoring and evaluating the situation every three hours because Mt. Barujari's status is still on alert," he said as reported by newsportal kompas.com.
Gede added that some airlines had started operating this morning.
"Wings Air, with 31 passengers from Sumbawa, landed at 9:30 a.m.," he said. (rin)(+)
