female employee wearing a Muslim headscarf who worked at a restaurant selling pork dishes in West Jakarta has been fired after an online photo of her serving customers went viral, drawing critical comments.
The photo, taken by the restaurant’s owner, showed the woman preparing a bowl of rice beside banners bearing the name of the restaurant, Nasi Uduk Babi Buncit, a reference to a dish made of pork and coconut milk, and cartoon pictures of pigs.
The restaurant owners decided to lay the woman off to avoid any misunderstanding after people discussing the photo online made sectarian comments.
“We no longer employ women wearing the hijab as of May 20, 2016, after receiving suggestions from Muslims who contacted us,” the restaurant said in a statement published on all its social media accounts on Tuesday.
“We also want to apologize to all Muslims who felt offended by the photo of a headscarf-wearing woman that went viral.”
In its clarification, the restaurant said that while it was the woman herself who sought work at the restaurant, she was never called on to touch pork, even using a spoon, and was never required to wash dishes that had been used to serve pork.
