he Finance Ministry’s taxation directorate general wants to strengthen cooperation with the National Police on issues ranging from tax collection to crime investigation.
"The police will help tax investigators, starting from the collection of taxes to the investigation of crimes," taxation directorate general spokesman Hestu Yoga Saksama said on Monday, as quoted by kontan.id.
The agreement followed up a 2012 memorandum of understanding with technical guidelines on each party’s part in implementing the cooperation, Hestu explained.
The taxation directorate general is striving to improve tax compliance by cracking down on tax evaders and pushing for prison sentences.
Meanwhile, the head of coordination and supervision of civil servants at the National Police's criminal investigation division, Heru Sulistianto, added that police personnel were ready to assist tax officers in collecting taxes.
He said law enforcement in taxation needed to be strengthened to increase state revenue. (ami/bbn)
