he City Council has called on the administration to cancel the removal of school building renovations from the city’s 2016 budget.
The council’s deputy speaker, Muhammad Taufik, said the funding for renovations was still needed as proper school buildings were an integral part of the student learning process.
“We want the administration to cancel the cutting of Rp 460 billion [US$34.5 million] from 50 schools in Jakarta,” he was quoted as saying by beritajakarta.com on Monday.
He added that if the budget allocation for school buildings was postponed until next year, the city’s education programs could not be carried out maximally.
“I think the government should prioritize such funding ahead of others, since [the cutback] would negatively affect students and the quality of education in the city,” he said.
