he government said Monday that it was upbeat about the imminent completion of the first section of a toll road connecting Bekasi on the outskirts of Jakarta to the capital expected for March 2017.
The construction of the 21.04-kilometer "Becakayu" toll road, an acronym of Bekasi, Cawang and Kampung Melayu, had been idle for some 20 years before a consortium of construction companies took over and restarted the project in late 2014.
After visiting the construction site on Monday, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said the construction of the 8-kilometer-long toll road section, which connects the Jakasampurna area in Bekasi with Borobudur University in Cipinang Melayu, East Jakarta, had nearly completed.
“The latest report suggests that construction is almost complete, with only one more percent [of the job left]. I think we can catch up [to the target],” the President said in a statement.
The toll road, costing Rp 7.2 trillion (US$550.5 million), will be operated by PT Kresna Kusuma Dyandra Marga (KKDM), a consortium of construction companies, with state-run Waskita Karya holding the largest share of 60 percent through its subsidiary Waskita Toll Road. (hwa)
