s much as 1 ton of plastic trash and 400 kilograms of organic litter was cleaned up by more than 500 volunteers who picked up Mt. Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara for two days last week.
Mt. Rinjani National Park Management (TNGR) said the volcano, famous for its beauty and notorious for its trash along the trekking paths, has been relatively cleaner after the two-day clean up action.
“We collected more than 1.4 tons of trash. One ton was inorganic material, like glass and plastic bottles, instant noodle and snack packaging, and we collected 400 kilograms of organic garbage, like dried leaves and tree bark,” said TNGR head Agus Budi Santosa on Friday in Mataram.

The clean up event ran on Dec. 10 and 11 and included 500 people from the Indonesian Military, the National Police, Forestry Agency, Tourism Agency, National Search and Rescue Team, mountaineer community and local resident community.
Agus said his office sorted the trash into brands, like plastic bottles from certain brands or instant noodles from a certain brand. “We want the companies to know and raise their awareness so they can also take part in educating consumers not to litter, especially not along Rinjani’s trekking paths,” he said.
He said he would hold the same event in April next year, and it would focus on educating people not to litter. (evi)
