Some 5,000 bottles of beer and red wine have been seized in Depok, West Java, in an attempt to free the city of alcohol.

First Insp. Winam Agus, the chief of the Depok Police’s special gang unit, the Jaguar Team, said the police conducted the operation in response to increasing incidents of crime among teenagers in the city.

"We see that alcohol is the main reason for the increased amount [of crime]. The Depok Police chief asked us to raid alcohol sellers violating regulations," Winam said as quoted by kompas.com.

He added that the police conducted the operation based on Depok Regional Regulation No. 6/2008 on the monitoring and control of alcohol.

"The regulation does not permit liquor distribution," Winam said.

He said he hoped citizens would actively participate in monitoring the distribution of alcohol in the city. (rdi)
