Police in Depok, West Java, have arrested a 41-year-old woman who allegedly sold her daughter to a foreign national in a prostitution scheme.
The suspect is alleged to have resorted to the option after failing to pay her Rp 100 million (US$6,300) debt to an online lending scheme.
The woman, identified only as D sold her daughter to the foreigner, identified only as T after multiple meetings in an apartment complex in Cimanggis, Depok. In the last meeting, the suspect left her daughter behind in the room after forcing the child to entertain the client.
Police have secured pieces of evidence, including a pink sweater and underwear belonging to the victim and the foreigner.
Head of Women and Children’s Protection (PPA) of the Depok Police First Insp. Nurhayati said the mother earned Rp 6 million ($381) in total from giving her daughter to the foreigner.
"When the exploitation was under way, the mother earned Rp 6 million. She had transacted with the client about four times," said Nurhayati.
