he Jakarta Environment Agency processed 70 tonnes of waste after a series of heavy downpours in the Jabodetabek area in the first few days of this month.
The agency has identified crucial locations to prevent garbage from Bogor and Depok adding further pressure to Jakarta's waste treatment centers, including the Ciliwung River Treatment Project on Jl. TB Simatupang, South Jakarta.
Adhitya Oktabery, the garbage-filtering coordinator on Jl. TB Simatupang, said the heaviest volume of filtered garbage arrived on Nov. 1-4.
"We have not included the intake on Nov. 5-6 in the previous total intake number of 70 tonnes," Adhitya said on Monday.
He said that two pontoon bridges in the Ciliwung River function as filters to prevent excess garbage intake from upstream. The bridges direct the garbage intake slightly sideways to a waste storage area dubbed kali gendong.
Adhitya said there were two pontoon bridges and kali gendong waste-storage areas in each section to double filter the garbage intake.
The annual flood problems caused by the surge of water and waste intake from the Ciliwung River prompted the installation of these infrastructures in the river to prevent damage to settlements along the watershed.
