ellular phone users are required to register their phone numbers by validating them with the numbers of their respective identity cards (NIK) and family cards (KK).

The registration officially starts on Tuesday and will end on Feb. 28 although cellular phone holders could already have carried out registration since Oct. 11, said Communications and Information Ministry spokesman Noor Iza told Antara on Tuesday.

About 9 million people have registered their phone numbers up to Monday, he said, adding that both old numbers and new numbers have to be registered.

The registration could be implemented through SMS or by visiting outlets of respective cellular phone operators, he added.

Noor said cellular users were given 15 extra days to register should they have not registered their phone numbers up to Feb. 27, but if they had not registered the numbers after the 15 extra days, the numbers would be blocked, particularly their call and SMS services.

But should they have not registered after another 15 days, the government would block all services, including internet use. (bbn)
