erobokan prison in Denpasar, Bali, has canceled the remission for US national Paul Anthony Hoffman, 57, following his attempted escape from the prison earlier this month.

"As he had tried to escape, we decided to cancel his remission," Kerobokan prison warden Tonny Nainggolan said on Monday.

The Law and Human Rights Ministry granted sentence remissions on Monday to 100 Christian prisoners at Kerobokan, including 11 foreign inmates.

"[Hoffman] should have received a 15-day [sentence reduction] if he hadn't tried to escape," Tonny said.

Hoffman, who is serving a 20-month prison sentence for theft, attempted to escape on Dec. 11 along with another American inmate, Christian Beasley.

Hoffman was caught soon after he jumped the prison wall, while Beasley — who is currently on trial and therefore ineligible for remission — was recaptured five days later in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

The Kerobokan warden said Hoffman had been placed in an isolation cell following his attempted escape. "We will keep him there indefinitely. Maybe until his release date," Tonny said.

The 11 foreign Kerobokan inmates that received sentence reductions are: Daniele Pieretto (Italy), David James Taylor (UK), Edward Norman Myatt (Australia), Frankho Pizarro Solano (Peru), Giuliano Lemoine (Germany), Jerry Meking Catalasan (the Philippines), Nikolos Bouikidis (Greece), Robert Andrew Fiddes Ellis (Australia), Roberto Castro De La Cuba (Peru), Ronald Ssemanda (Uganda) and Tommy Schaefer (US). (ahw)
