Turkish, RI firms strike defense cooperation deals

Two Turkish defense companies set up separate cooperation deals with their Indonesian counterparts at the 2022 Indo Defense and Expo in Jakarta on Wednesday, further strengthening existing industrial ties.

Defense electronics and software maker Havelsan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT Falah Inovasi Teknologi to cooperate in product development for training and simulation.

“This started with the cooperation in developing shooting simulators, parachute simulators and flight simulators,” the companies said in a joint press release.

“In the future, more products will be developed together.”

The MoU was signed by Havelsan chief executive officer Mehmet Akif Nacar and Falah CEO Noviayana in a ceremony attended by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto at the Jakarta International Expo in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

Havelsan has been in the industry since 1982 and provides solutions for both military and non-military needs.

The Turkish company develops products that make training processes faster, more efficient, cost-effective and can be done repeatedly. It is also important to gain experience in a risk-free training environment with realistic training scenarios.

Falah commissioner and chief technology officer Deni Darodjat Muslim said that the Turkish defense company was a strategic partner in developing various training and simulation products for its technology.

“We are delighted to cooperate with Havelsan because they have long experience and share the same vision and passion, especially regarding industrial development and transfer of technology," he said, as quoted by the press release.

Noviayana said the MoU signing was a new chapter for both companies after they met at the 2021 International Defense Exhibition (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi.

“We met for the first time at IDEX 2021 Abu Dhabi and continued our due diligence, visited each other, we visited Ankara and they visited Jakarta," she said in the statement.

Within the framework of the cooperation, Falah will upgrade the hardware and software of its system to suit the needs of the Indonesian military forces, security forces, law enforcement forces and special forces. The upgrade will include, but is not limited to, weapon chutes and aircraft customization, the Indonesian visual database and special training scenarios.

Meanwhile, Nacar said that Indonesia and Southeast Asia held an important position for Havelsan and Falah was the right partner.

“We are delighted to have Falah as our partner. They have the ability and qualified resources in the development of various products,” he was quoted as saying in the release.

“Currently we are also actively participating in various military and non-military related projects in Indonesia.”

Falah has developed content and training scenarios specifically for aircraft maintenance training, virtual reality language learning systems and various other e-learning subject matters.

Separately, Turkish Defense Industry Agency president Ismail Demir and Prabowo witnessed the signing of a framework agreement in aerospace engineering programs between Turkish Aerospace and state-owned aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI).

The agreement was signed by Turkish Aerospace Industries CEO Temel Kotil and executive vice president for aircraft Atilla Dogan, while PTDI was represented by president director Gita Amperiawan and production director Batara Silaban.

The agreement aims to establish an engineering collaboration project between the companies to be executed through the procurement of engineering manpower services and engineering work packages.

“This Global Partnership will also utilize the manpower, the capabilities, at the same time we will also merge the aircraft market,” Gita said as quoted by the press release.

Turkey had a strong presence at Indo Defense, which concluded on Saturday.

Some 30 other Turkish defense companies took part at the biennial event, including Aselsan, Baykar, Dasal, Decsan, FNSS, Nurol Makina, Otokar, Profen, Roketsan and Titra Technology.
