Starting in December 2018, a number of towns in Central Java and Yogyakarta will be connected by a new train, Joglosemarkerto.

Launched at Semarang Tawang station on Sunday, Dec. 1, the train serves Semarang, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, Kroya, Purwokerto, Tegal and Pekalongan. It has two executive cars comprising 100 seats and seven economy cars with 560 seats.

Vice president of the Purwokerto chapter of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), MN Huda D Santoso, said trains connecting the towns were previously available. "But passengers would need to transfer between lines, as opposed to Joglosemarkerto,” he said.

Joglosemarkerto is an extension of one of the Kamandaka train lines, which serves Semarang Tawang and Purwokerto.

Tickets for the train are priced at Rp 40,000 (US$2.80) to Rp 390,000 for executive class and Rp 30,000 to Rp 260,000 for economy. KAI is offering 10% discounts for passengers who travel with Joglosemarkerto from Dec. 1 to 13.

“Tickets are available to order through offline channels as well as the KAI Access app on Android,” Huda said.

There are three departure points for the daily train, namely Semarang Tawang Station at 6:15 a.m., Solo Balapan Station at 6 a.m. and Purwokerto Station at 5 a.m.

"We hope the Joglosemarkerto train will provide more options to the public. We also hope to support economic and tourism development in the areas," said KAI's director Edi Sukmoro. (wng)
