Govt stops operating Chinese autonomous train in Nusantara

Previously, then-president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo claimed the autonomous train system would be better than the Jakarta MRT and LRT, noting that the latter two were expensive and hard to develop.

he Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Authority has decided to stop operating and return an autonomous rail transit (ART) system to its Chinese vendor after trial evaluations found it did not meet government standards. 

Mohammed Ali Berawi, undersecretary for green and digital transformation at the IKN Authority, said the assessment of the train’s proof of concept (PoC) found that the autonomous system could not function as the government had expected.

The IKN Authority had the conducted trials with Chinese state-owned defense company Norinco and Chinese state-owned rolling stock firm CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd.

“If [the system is not functioning properly] then, as stated in the [agreement] for the PoC, we will ask Norinco to return the trains in IKN to China,” Ali said on Wednesday, as quoted by detik.com.

In June, Jokowi asked regional heads, especially in the major cities of Surabaya, Bandung, Medan and Balikpapan, to install autonomous train systems as opposed to MRT and LRT systems.
