he police have admitted that the fatal shooting of a high school student in Semarang, Central Java, occurred as a result the police officer involved using excessive force, backtracking from their previous claim that the officer had been trying to break up a student brawl.
Pressure is mounting for a thorough and transparent probe into the death of the 17-year-old student, identified only as GRO, who was allegedly shot by Second Adj. Insp. Robig Zaenudin.
Robig has been detained at the Central Java Police headquarters and is facing an investigation by the internal affairs division for using excessive force, but has not been named a criminal suspect.
Semarang Police chief Sr. Comr. Irwan Anwar told lawmakers in a meeting on Tuesday at the House of Representatives in Jakarta that the incident started when Robig, who was on his way home from work, encountered some teenagers riding motorbikes after the brawl was over.
According to Irwan, one of the motorbikes, driven by a teenager thought to be from the defeated group in the brawl, nearly collided with Robig when it sped past him. The motorbike at the time was pursued by three others, including one on which GRO was riding.
Irwan said that Robig waited until the pursuing group made a U-turn toward his location and opened fire just as they passed. He then started chasing after the group and eventually realized that his shot had wounded GRO. He decided to take the student to a nearby hospital, where the young man succumbed to his injuries.
Irwan said that his subordinate had used “excessive force” and been “neglectful in assessing the situation”.
