Artisanal Initiative: Bringing Indonesia’s artisanal craftsmanship to the fore

B

elieving in the power of community, two Bali-based design studios – Ong Cen Kuang and EVA NATASA – launched the Artisanal Initiative, a platform for all elements of Indonesia’s creative industry to share their knowledge and ideas.

The debut edition of the Artisanal Initiative, which will highlight Indonesia’s artisanal craftsmanship, will take place at Ong Cen Kuang workshop in Dalung, Denpasar, Bali from Oct. 4 to 7.

The four-day event offers a handful of activities, namely a Roundtable Dialogue, Artisan Exhibition, Artisan Workshops, Pop-Up Eatery and Artisan Market.

Lighting designer Budiman Ong of Ong Cen Kuang and industrial designer Eva Natasa of EVA NATASA expect the Artisanal Initiative will be a resourceful think tank for collaborations in open communication.

“We are targeting a wide range of audiences, from students to key industry players,” said Budiman, who founded Ong Cen Kuang lighting design studio in 2008.

“We hope someday this platform can have an impact on the public,” he added.

The platform’s name signifies the two designers’ profound appreciation for materials, design and artisanal craftsmanship.

“We believe when we make an object by hand, our sensory perception is heightened. This sensorial experience stimulates our five senses to come up with new ideas,” Budiman continues.

Artisanal Initiative is part of Budiman and Eva’s effort in increasing the public’s appreciation toward artisanal works. The event is also aimed at celebrating Indonesian craftsmanship and promoting the use of artisanal techniques in creating design identity.

The four-day Artisanal Initiative offers a wide range of activities that suit both professional designers and crafters, and also the general public.

In the roundtable dialogue, designers from notable studios – such as Santi Alaysius and Hamphrey Tedja of Domisilium Studio, and Abie Abdillah of Studio Hiji – will discuss the current issues in Indonesia’s creative industry.

ARA Studio’s Hermawan Dasmanto, CushCush’s Jindee, BYO Living’s Lim Masulin, AEDI’s Eko Priharseno, Tarum Bali’s I Made Arsana Yasa and Duanyam’s Melia Winata are among the participants of the discussion.

The artisan exhibition will put the limelight on the works of Studio Hiji, Eva Natasa, Ong Cen Kuang and Gaya Ceramic.

The visitors can hone their crafting skills in artisan workshops facilitated by renowned designers. The workshops include “Construct Your Own Lamp” by Budiman Ong, “Rattan Stationery” by Abie Abdillah and “Character Making: Upcycling Matters!” by CushCush & LagiLagi.

In the Artisan Market, visitors can take home artisanal pieces from Studio Hiji, Gaya Ceramics, Duanyam, LagiLagi, Lovelife Studio, Studio Dapur, Spa factory, Homemate, tarum and Celia Carpet.
