The PDI-P's secretary-general said that its presidential candidate would have to be someone who had been cultivated through "the party's internal process".
senior politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) said over the weekend that the party would only nominate one of its own members for the 2024 presidential election.
PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto said its presidential candidate would have to be a figure cultivated through the party's internal process.
"For the PDI-P, a leader must have gone through the party's [member-development] process. The presidential candidate must come from the party's internal process. This is the mandate from Ibu [Mrs.] Megawati," Hasto said.
He also said that when the time was right, the party's matriarch, Megawati Soekarnoputri, would announce the PDI-P’s presidential candidate.
"It's the authority of Ibu Mega to pick the presidential and vice presidential candidates. She will make the announcement in due time," Hasto said.
In a speech during the PDI-P’s 50th anniversary event in January, Megawati said she would reveal the party's presidential candidate during an event on June 1 this year.
Ganjar made a similar statement last week, saying that a leading PDI-P politician should be selected. He made the statement in response to a proposal that Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto run for president with running mate Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, a popular PDI-P politician.
