A

fresh proposal to no longer hold the presidential and legislative elections on a single day has emerged as policymakers plan to revise the General Elections Law to improve the country’s election system.

Home Minister Tito Karnavian underlined the need to redesign the election system, proposing that the current format of simultaneous presidential and legislative elections should be reviewed.

"As we all agreed that we need to redesign our electoral system at both central and regional levels, I’d say, perhaps, one of the options would be to hold presidential and legislative elections on different days," Tito told lawmakers on Wednesday.

The government, he said, would take the initiative to conduct a study of the prevailing electoral law and host a series of discussions with scholars, civil society groups and election observers.

House of Representatives’ Commission II overseeing home affairs held a meeting on Wednesday with the Home Ministry and the General Elections Commission (KPU), during which they evaluated the organizing of February’s presidential and legislative elections.
