pproximately 4687 out of 4731 base transceiver stations (BTS) in Serang, Pandeglang and South Lampung regencies are operational following disruptions caused by the Sunda Strait tsunami on Saturday.

A press release issued by the Informatics and Post Directorate General of the Communications and Information Ministry, Ahmad M. Ramli, confirmed on Tuesday that only a small percentage of BTS in the regencies were not operational. However, telecommunication access in areas were BTS were still down could be covered by mobile BTS and recovery system services provided by operators.

All BTS are expected to resume normal operations once electricity returns to normal and new equipment arrives.

Cellular operators reported that they had been providing generators to power the BTS.

Regarding BTS locations with unstable electricity, the ministry has requested that operators deploy BTS combat and mobile generators as backup.

The ministry would also monitor the progress of tsunami-affected BTS and assess cellular service.

Mobile operator company Telkomsel has deployed a disaster aid team to repair damaged communication networks in the areas affected by the tsunami, while XL has distributed aid, including free cellular services to affected areas. (mut)
