resident Prabowo Subianto has wrapped up his state visit to Brazil by reaffirming Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with the South American country, as the two emerging economies seeking to bolster ties under the pressures of the United States’ trade tariffs and shifting international order.
After wrapping up his debut appearance at the 17th BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro earlier this week, Prabowo flew to Brasilia for bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
After a stately welcome on Wednesday with a military parade at Palácio do Planalto, the seat of government and the president’s official workplace, the two leaders and their delegations proceeded to engage in discussions on potential areas of cooperation.
At a joint press conference after the meeting, Prabowo stressed the importance of accelerating cooperation between Indonesia and Brazil, particularly in the fields of agriculture, energy and defense, noting that both countries stood to gain significantly through a closer partnership.
“We feel that we have so many common interests. We have so many resources that we can really benefit each other, not only in trade and industry, but in many other fields,” he said.
Praising Brazil’s leadership in biofuel development and agricultural innovation, Prabowo said Indonesia would send technical experts to study the country’s modern farming methods and renewable energy technologies, an initiative championed by Lula.
“We’re planning to achieve 100 percent renewable energy within the next 10 years,” the President added.
