P

resident Prabowo Subianto is looking to meet face-to-face with United States President Donald Trump in a last-ditch effort to fend off a looming punishing tariff on Indonesian exports.

“There is [a plan to meet Trump], but I cannot confirm when,” State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said in Jakarta on Friday, as quoted by news agency Antara.

For the time being, Prabowo is scheduled to continue a two-week international trip that kicked off in Saudi Arabia and Brazil and is expected to include stops in Belgium and France.

The government says it will continue its negotiation efforts to secure a trade deal with Washington before the Aug. 1 deadline, days after Trump doubled down on a threat to slap a 32 percent import tariff on goods shipped from Indonesia, after providing an extra three weeks for talks before the duty is to be enforced.

The government hopes to head off the tariff by highlighting Indonesia’s strategic role in global trade and its vast reserves of natural resources.

Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto, who has been leading the negotiations since the initial tariff announcement in April, embarked on a three-day visit to Washington on Tuesday, according to ministry spokesperson Haryo Limanseto.
