Former Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, who has asked to be referred to as BTP from now on, was released from prison on Thursday morning after serving nearly two years.

Flower boards expressing well wishes for the former governor began filling the front gate of the Mobile Brigade headquarters in Depok on Wednesday evening. Twitter is also abuzz with netizens welcoming back BTP, with the hashtag #WelcomeBackBTP listed among the top 10 social media worldwide trending topics on Thursday. Other hashtags related to BTP, #WelcomeBackAhok and #WelcomeBTP, have also been trending.

User@yennikwoktweeted a picture from BTP’s eldest son Nicholas Sean’s Instagram, with the caption, “He’s back. My dad’s a free man! Thank you everyone for the support.”

User @Kayori_Hengkyposted three edited Timemagazine covers with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and BTP on the covers. Each bore captions referencing Star Wars, such as “A New Hope” for Jokowi, “Empire Strikes Back” for Prabowo and “Return of the Jedi” for BTP. The tweet reads, "The series is complete, fulfill your destiny."

Another Star Wars reference showed up in a tweet by @sejutatemanid. BTP’s face could be seen in a brown cloak known to be worn by the Jedi, the main protagonists in the Star Wars universe. In a text stylized like those on a movie poster, the caption read, “BTP. Return of the Jedi. January XXIV”, while the tweet reads “He’s coming home.”

User@haebaesposted an illustration of BTP with a caption that read, “Wish you didn’t go through all of that in the first place but now we need you to come back stronger.”

Some also utilized a part of BTP’s name (“Tjahaja” means light), such as user @PartaiSocmedwho wrote, “There are world figures who shine even more after they’re imprisoned. #BTPis one of those people with the ultimate light.”

User@sahaL_AS tweeted, "This quote from Gandhi paints Ahok precisely", along with a picture of BTP side-by-side with the quote. "Never apologize for being correct, or for being years ahead of your time. If you're right and you know it, speak your mind. Even if you are a minority, the truth is still the truth." (wng)
