Jakartans enjoy fun run at Ragunan Zoo

FUN RUNDanielle Dalton of the United States (photo) crosses the finish line of the Women's 5 kilometer race at the third Puma Jakarta Free Spirit Zoo Run at Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta on Sunday.

Dalton clocked 21 minutes, 52 seconds to become the fastest in the women's 5km category.

The organizers said more than 700 runners of different nationalities and ages took part in the event that aimed at promoting fitness and raising money for charity.

"It's my first time joining this kind of race. The track is interesting as it is located in the zoo. It is also a bit hilly and challenging but all in all it was fun," said Dalton, who has been living in the city for six months with her husband, who is working here.

Runner-up of the men's 5km for 60 years old to 69 years old, Gaylord Anderson, lauded the organizers' choice to pick the zoo for the track.

"It was fun to run while we could also enjoy the scenery. I'd love to bring kids from an orphanage to this zoo sometime in the future," said the 60-year-old.

Aside from the 5km run, the event also featured the 100 meter sprint for kids and 2.5km fun run for individual and team.

Gregory Long of the International Sports Club of Indonesia (ISCI), one of the event organizers, said they hoped to raise Rp 120 million for charity through the event.

"Last year, we got Rp 80 million and donated some of the amount to orphanages," Long said.

The Jakarta Race Series consists of four races. The first was held by Jakarta International School in November last year, followed by the British International School in February.

The last in the series is slated for May 5. (nkn)
