Jessy Rompies, back from Australia with the Indonesian Fed Cup team, got off to a winning start at the 2009 Cigna Open tennis tournament in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The top seed advanced to the next round with an extra effort in her win over Voni Darlina 6-4, 7-5 at the Rp 200 million (US$17,000) event.
"I was a bit jaded in the early game and couldn't read her play yet. So I made lots of unforced errors and was stretched to deuces," said Jessy, who is also playing in the doubles with Beatrice Gumulya.
She arrived on Sunday with the Fed Cup team that finished fourth behind winner Australia, New Zealand and Thailand.
"I'll be more focused in the next matches to win the title this year."
On Thursday, she takes on Dina Karina, who earned a second round place after defeating Dwi Rahayu Pitri 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Beatrice, seeded second in the singles, showed determination in her 6-0, 6-2 rout of Aldila Sutjiadu. She next takes on Vanessa Gunawan, who beat Cynthia Wibawa 6-4, 6-0.
Jessy and Beatrice are favorites in both singles and doubles, with defending champion and Fed Cup member Ayu Fani Damayanti skipping the event because of fatigue.
In the men's division, defending champion and second seed Sunu Wahyu Trijati had to work hard to beat Agung Bagus 7-6 (1), 6-4. He next faces Setyo Dwi Andriyanto, who ousted Enrico Satria 6-2, 6-4.
Sunu brushed aside any talk of a target, saying he would play his best.
"I'm not targeting anything."
Top seed and Davis Cup player Christoper Rungkat beat Ariawan Poerbadin 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round and will meet veteran Bonit Wiryawan, who trashed Fandi Suyadi 6-2, 64, on Thursday.
