Cheesecake may not sound as sophisticated as tiramisu or blanc-mange, but when it comes to taste, it can be considered an equally common dessert, since it offers a smooth, creamy confection with only a little hint of tart.
Initially, cheesecake was introduced to the Indonesian market through bakeries at several five-star hotels. Today, more and more people are enjoying cheesecake's availability at bakeries and cake stores nationwide. One such store is the Singapore-based premium bakery boutique BreadTalk.
BreadTalk, famous for its Floss (bread with beef floss toppings) and the spicier variant Fire Floss, is adding four new cheesecake varieties to make it six. These six delicacies are being offered up to mark the chain's sixth anniversary.
Profits are another reason for BreadTalk to introduce these cheesecake varieties. Yashinta "Shinta" Rani, promotional manager at BreadTalk, said her company decided to offer the new cheesecake varieties simply because they contribute from 30 to 40 percent of total sales.
"There is also demand from customers to add more varieties. It is also a part of our commitment to keep innovating with new products," Shinta says.
The four new flavors are Oreo Cheesecake, Chocolate Cheesecake, Orange Cheesecake and Strawberry Cheesecake. The Oreo variety, a mix of delicate cream cheese with Oreo crumbles inside and on top, will suit the biscuit lovers' taste buds.
The balance of yin and yang is reflected in the sweetness of the chocolate fudge and the delicious cream cheese that collide into one sensational taste in the Chocolate Cheesecake.
The Strawberry Cheesecake may be the right choice for those who prefer an exotic mix of the sweet-sour combination, for the cake has a smearing of strawberry jam on top.
The freshness of gourmet orange jam combined with cream cheese creates a unique taste in the Orange Cheesecake. This variety has a lighter taste than the others because it uses mousse rather than the usual cream.
The other two varieties are the Blueberry Cheesecake and Euro Cheesecake. Blueberry, renowned for its anti-carcinogenic and hypertension control, proves the right choice as the cheesecake's main ingredients.
The Euro variety features the originality of cheesecake, with the fruit jelly on top and Danish crumb at the bottom.
Customers can enjoy all these cheesecake varieties for between Rp 13,500 (US$1.30) and Rp 15,000 each.
Besides adding these new cake varieties, BreadTalk also plans to expand its chain in the country this year to 12 outlets.
Having arrived in Indonesia in 2003, BreadTalk now has around 50 outlets in major cities across the country, including in Jakarta, Bandung (West Java), Surabaya (East Java), Bali, Makassar (South Sulawesi), Manado (North Sulawesi), Pekanbaru (Sumatra), Yogyakarta, Surakarta (Central Java), Palembang, Batam and Medan (North Sumatra). BreadTalk will soon open new outlets at the Atrium Senen Mall in Central Jakarta and Mall of Indonesia, North Jakarta.
