T

he Riau administration has come under widespread public scrutiny for failing to pay full bonuses to local athletes who won medals at last year’s National Sports Week (PON), with officials claiming they only had enough funds to cover less than half of the promised amount.

The issue drew public attention after the athletes voiced frustration over Riau Governor Abdul Wahid’s decision to grant a Rp 20 million scholarship to Rayyan Arkhan Dikha, who recently gained national and international fame for his energetic dance performance during the traditional Pacu Jalur boat race.

Riau’s artistic gymnastics athlete, Puja Sri Syahfitri, who won a bronze medal at the 2024 PON, said she felt “disappointed” and “heartbroken” after seeing Governor Abdul grant a Rp 20 million scholarship to Rayyan, while she and other athletes have yet to receive their promised bonuses.

"How could the governor so easily give him Rp 20 million and appoint him as the province’s tourism ambassador? He didn’t treat us athletes the same way. None of us were appointed as sports ambassadors, even though we’ve worked hard to bring pride to Riau," she said recently, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Last year, the Riau administration announced it had allocated Rp 40 billion in bonuses for athletes competing in the 2024 PON, which was held in North Sumatra and Aceh in September. The bonus scheme promised Rp 300 million for gold medal winners, Rp 150 million for silver and Rp 75 million for bronze.
