Soraya Haque: Simple and adventurous

For former model and actress Soraya Haque, weekends and holidays should be as simple as drinking a leisurely cup of coffee at home — or as adventurous as backpacking across Europe

Soraya Haque: Simple and adventurous

F

or former model and actress Soraya Haque, weekends and holidays should be as simple as drinking a leisurely cup of coffee at home — or as adventurous as backpacking across Europe.

People who have nine-to-five jobs normally get days off on Saturdays and Sundays. But I’m an entertainer. I don’t have a routine schedule and can get days off anytime my work schedule permits.

If I do have a day off, I usually try to stay home where I’m free from most responsibilities. I can be the real me – no makeup, no fancy dresses, no diplomatic talk.

I usually read a book, enjoy a couple cups of coffee and listen to music – those kinds of activities are free!

If I have more than a few days off, I like travelling to other cities or foreign countries. I really love travelling outside of Asia, especially to Europe where fewer Indonesians travel. My favorite European country is France, but unfortunately I can’t go there on every holiday.

When I do have a vacation I usually like to go to the beach. I like the beach more than the mountains because there are so many more things to do at the beach, like swimming, snorkeling and just enjoying being near the sea.

My husband and I are planning to take our children backpacking across Europe sometime in the near future. We have three children, the first is 18 years old, the second is 15 and the third is 12, and they are all very independent.

My husband and I still haven’t decided which countries we want to explore when we go. Having never done this before, I think the trip will be very exciting.

I also think backpacking will be good for the children. They can learn how to read maps, plan their own transport and deal with the facilities in cheap hostels. I hope this will teach them to appreciate the little things in life. I want my children to be adventurous and to dare to take chances at least once in their lives.

There are also many beautiful places in Indonesia that I have yet to explore. I am extremely curious about East Nusa Tenggara as it is the only place in Indonesia I have yet to go.

My father worked at an oil and gas company when I was young, so I have been to some remote places in Kalimantan, Maluku and Papua. When I was still modeling, my work brought me to many places across Indonesia, but never to East Nusa Tenggara.
