T

he Banten Election Commission (KPU) has officially announced three governor and deputy governor candidate pairs that will run for the 2011-2016 gubernatorial post after they were given their ballot numbers on Thursday.

Incumbent Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah and her running mate, actor-turned-politician Rano Karno, drew the first spot. Tangerang Mayor Wahidin Halim and running mate Irna Narulita, the wife of former Pandeglang regent Dimyati Natakusumah, are on the second ticket, and Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) lawmaker Jazuli Juwaini and running mate Makmun Muzakki are on the third ticket.

“We eventually canceled the candidacy of another pair, labor union leader Dwi Jatmiko and his running mate, Tjetjep Mulyadinata, who registered as independents because they failed to meet administrative requirements,” KPU chairman Hambali told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

Hambali said that the ballot numbers were decided in an open drawing after the commissioners held a plenary session at Permata Krakatau Hotel in Cilegon on Thursday.

The election campaign is scheduled to last from Oct. 5 to 18, election day on Oct. 22, according to Banten KPU commissioner Agus Supriatna, who is also the chairman of the candidacy working group.

Atut and Rano’s candidacy was backed by a coalition of several major political parties, such as the Golkar Party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the National Mandate Party (PAN), the National Awakening Party (PKB), the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party, the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) and the Star Crescent Party (PBB).

Wahidin-Irna are backed by the ruling Democratic Party, while Jazuli-Makmun are backed by the PKS, the United Development Party (PPP) and the Star Reform Party (PBR).

To the surprise of many, however, during the ticket drawing, the chairman of the Democratic Party’s Cilegon chapter, Ali Mujahidin, declared his support for Atut and Rano.

“We only backed Wahidin as the Banten Democrat Party’s chairman, but not as a governor candidate because he is not a Democrat Party member,” he said.
