“The Foreign Ministry continues to monitor and maintain its communication with Indonesian citizens participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla,” Judha Nugraha, the ministry’s citizen protection director, said in a statement on Thursday. “The Indonesian Embassy in Rome, which also covers Cyprus, has deployed an officer to assist [Hussein] who is currently en route to Cyprus.”
Husein, chief coordinator of the Indonesia Global Peace Convoy (IGPC), a consortium of Indonesian humanitarian organizations, set sail for Gaza on Sept. 18, two days after fellow delegate Wanda Hamidah became the first Indonesian activist onboard. Muhammad Fatur Rohman joined the mission the following day.
The activists joined five Indonesian vessels financed through Indonesian public donations for the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission involving at least 44 countries, aimed at breaking Israel’s blockade of Gaza and delivering essential aid, including food and medical supplies.
On Oct. 1, the Nusantara vessel carrying Wanda and Fatur stopped in Italy and was denied clearance to continue for undisclosed reasons, prompting the two activists to return home. Husein remained the sole Indonesian delegate continuing to represent Indonesia in the humanitarian effort.
As Husein and other international activists approached Gaza’s coastline, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted multiple naval blockades, intercepting all 40 vessels involved by Friday morning, according to AFP.
