AKARTA: Experts have called on the House of Representatives to complete a draft bill on new media that would defend the Interests of the public.
The House is expected to deliberate a bill in 2012 on the convergence of traditional print and broadcast media with the internet-based media.
The bill should require media companies to educate the public or express their concern, Paulus Widiyanto, the former lawmaker who led the House special committee deliberating the Broadcasting Law, said.
He also said that the bill should also include provisions to regulate media conglomeration.
Paramadina University communication expert Eka W. Wuryatna said that there had not yet been an agreed-upon definition of what was media
convergence.
“A media convergence law should not only regulate technology in the media, it should also touch upon its sociocultural impacts, its affect on the public and consumer behavior,” he said.
