iPhone 4S officially coming to town next week

A

pple freaks should get ready for the iPhone 4S smartphone that will be released in the early days of the Lunar New Year.

Apple Inc.’s Indonesian partner, publicly listed telecommunications operator PT Telkomsel, says they are preparing everything, ranging from marketing to security, for the launch of iPhone 4S, which is scheduled for next Friday.

“We will launch iPhone 4S on Jan. 27. But as for all the packages and bonuses we’re going to offer, it’s still a secret,” Telkomsel corporate communication officer Steve Saerang told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

He said Jakarta would likely be the place for the launch, adding that he would disclose everything “a few days before D-day” to avoid long queues and to anticipate all “unwanted things”.

Apple postponed sales of its iPhone 4S in its China stores on Jan. 13 after angry customers and gangs of scalpers threw eggs at its flagship Beijing store, The Associated Press reported.

Steve said people could buy iPhone 4S right away during the launch at prices that “will be affordable and will not be too far from the prices of iPhone 4”. Prices of Rp 6,999,000 (US$784) and Rp 7,999,000 were set for iPhone 4 with capacities of 16 GB and 32 GB, respectively, when it was first launched on Dec. 17, 2010.

According to Telkomsel vice president for channel management Gideon Edie Purnomo, the company has sold more than 100,000 units of iPhone 4 so far. But he refused to disclose the company’s sales target of iPhone 4S.

A gadget geek and iPhone 4 user, Vishnu Mahmud, said it was likely time for users of iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS to upgrade their devices to iPhone 4S, while users of iPhone 4 might want to wait because Apple would likely release an updated version of iPhone later this year and iPhone 4S would be quite expensive.

“But it is up to people whether they want to switch their phones to iPhone 4S or not,” he Vishnu told the Post.

As a photographer, Vishnu said iPhone 4S’s 8-Megapixel camera could match the Panasonic Lumix LX3 in terms of the photograph quality both devices delivered. “Photographs captured with iPhone 4S are good enough, you don’t have to use a camera. Plus, [iPhone 4S] is more compact [than a camera] and is easy to carry in your pocket,” he said.
