The escalating conflict has drawn massive global attention, given the Middle East’s already fragile geopolitical landscape amid the unabating Israeli war and food blockade on Gaza.
orld leaders urged restraint on Friday after Israel pounded Iran, striking 100 targets including nuclear and military sites, and killing senior figures.
The large-scale strikes, in what Tel Aviv called “Operation Rising Lion”, hit multiple areas of Iran, including the capital Tehran, wounding at least 95 people, an emergency services official told state TV.
The strikes killed Iran's highest-ranking military officer, armed forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri, and the head of the Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, Iranian media reported. Another report said six Iranian nuclear scientists were among those who were killed in the strikes.
United Nations chief Antonio Guterres asked "both sides to show maximum restraint, avoiding at all costs a descent into deeper conflict, a situation that the region can hardly afford," according to a spokesperson.
Guterres was "particularly concerned" by Israel's strikes on nuclear installations amid the ongoing United States-Iran negotiations.
The US, which was due to hold the latest round of the talks with Iran on restricting its nuclear program on Sunday, said it had had no part in the operation and warned Iran not to attack its personnel or interests.
US President Donald Trump told Fox News he had prior knowledge of the Israeli strikes, which Israel said involved 200 fighter jets. Trump also stressed that Tehran "cannot have a nuclear bomb".
