The government has rejected the findings of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) declaring the 1965 anti-communist purge a gross human rights violation and has refused to apologize for the victims of the atrocity.

Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto rejected the Komnas HAM conclusion and insisted that the mass killings, which were state-sponsored according to the rights body, were justified to save the country from communism.

The other way to get justice for the innocent victims of the New Order is to file cases at the International Court in The Hague.

Just like the victims of Hitler’s Holocaust, the victims of the Yugoslav civil war and the victims of dictatorships in Chile and Argentina. There has been some success in pursuing those cases, individually or collectively.

Ivan
