he Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said Indonesia posted 1.07 percent monthly inflation in January, primarily due to food supply disruptions caused by adverse weather.
'Staple food triggered the inflation as during January, bad weather affected and disrupted food distribution,' BPS head Suryamin told a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Meanwhile, the annual inflation rate stood at 8.22 percent and calendar-year inflation for January-December 2013 was recorded at 1.07 percent, the BPS said.
January's core inflation stood at 0.56 percent, and 4.53 percent year-on-year.
'January's inflation, which reached 1.07 percent, was relatively higher than the average January inflation level during the last five years,' said Suryamin.
The BPS recorded that the inflation rate in January 2013 stood at only 1.03 percent, higher than the inflation rate of 0.76 percent in 2012, 0.89 percent in 2011, and 0.84 percent in 2010. Indonesia recorded 0.07 percent deflation in January 2009.
Suryamin said staple food contributed 0.56 percent to January's inflation, followed by price increases in household needs ' comprising rent, water, electricity, gas and fuel ' which accounted for 0.25 percent of January's inflation figure. (ebf)
