Youth psychologist Tiwin Herman said on Friday that the recent murder cases indicated that many youngsters were struggling to control their emotions.
'Nowadays, teenagers in Greater Jakarta are more likely to adopt the values of their peers,' she said, adding that the frequent occurrence of brawls between neighborhoods gangs indicated that the teenagers were becoming temperamental, aggressive, violent members of society.
Tiwin explained that three environments impacted on the lives of the young: home, school and societies or peers.
Ideally the home is the ideal place to teach children how to control their emotions, but due to the trappings of modern lifestyles youngsters tended to be more emotionally attached to their peers than their parents, she said.
She went on to suggest: that parents mast take a more active role: 'I am afraid, such cases of violence may happen again and again if parents are not aware of this problem,' she said. (ask)
