T

he Foreign Ministry has expressed Indonesia’s condolences to the families of the people who died on Thursday when an Air India flight bound for London crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport, killing at least 279.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims during this incredibly difficult time,” the ministry wrote on Saturday on MoFA Indonesia (@Kemlu_RI), its official X account.

“We share in your grief and offer our unwavering support. May the memories of the lost bring comfort and strength,” it added.

Air traffic control received a Mayday from Air India flight 171 shortly before it crashed after taking off at around 1:38 p.m. on June 12, plowing into residential buildings in nearby Meghani Nagarand and then exploding, leaving its tail section jutting out of a dormitory for medical staff. Emergency services continued recovery efforts on Saturday, extracting a badly burned body from the relatively intact tail section before cranes were used to remove the wreckage.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew including pilot Sumeet Sabharwal and copilot Clive Kundar, was headed to London Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom, where it was scheduled to land at 6:25 p.m.

A police source said on Saturday that 279 bodies had been found at the site of the crash, AFP reported, making it one of the worst plane disasters of the 21st century.
