T

he North Sulawesi provincial administration has announced it would once again operate flight services between Manado and Davao in the Philippines with the aim of further expanding economic cooperation between Indonesia and the neighboring country.

"The reopening of the flight route is especially expected to help boost cooperation in tourism," executive secretary of the Manado-Bitung Integrated Economic Development Zone (KAPET Manado-Bitung) Hanna Mandagi said in Manado on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.

The Manado-Davao route used to be served by a pioneer flight, but the service was frequently halted due to undisclosed reasons.

Hanna said the flight was expected to attract more tourists from the Philippines to Indonesia.

"Aside from tourists, there will be more businessmen to explore opportunities for investment in North Sulawesi," she said.

Head of the Manado branch office of national carrier Garuda Indonesia Viktor Sitohang said the provincial administration had reached out to Garuda to operate the route.

"We've been contacted by the Philippines consulate general too for possible charter flights," he said without mentioning when flight services would start. (atw)
