ustoms and Excise officers have foiled an attempt to smuggle gemstones worth Rp 485 billion (US$42.38 million) out of Indonesia in six containers headed to the US, Taiwan and China.
Tanjung Priok Custom and Excise Office chief, Wijayanta Bekti Mukarta, said on Thursday that five companies identified as CV JL, PT BKT, CV BSA, PT YAJA and PT SHS, had allegedly manipulated export documents.
'The documents were manipulated to avoid an export ban,' Wijayanta was quoted as saying by tempo.co.
The confiscated gemstones were 1,534 pieces of natural silicified wood chalcedony and four pieces of natural quartz on matrix. Aside from that, there were 2,354 kilograms of natural blue, natural brown obsidian, natural jasper chalcedony, natural agate chalcedony and natural fossilized wood chalcedony.
Wijayanta went on to say that the gemstones were sourced in June to November 2013 in Central and West Java. (put)
