rivers from different on-demand services platforms staged a protest in Jakarta on Monday, expressing their mounting discontent over government neglect of their demands regarding commission rate cuts and a plan to raise fares by 15 percent.

Igun Wicaksono, head of Garda Indonesia (two-wheeler action movement), said in a press release on Sunday that around 50,000 drivers from several on-demand services platforms would gather in front of the State Palace compound on Monday to hold a mass “bid off” strike.

Based on photographs from Monday, the actual number of protesters appeared to be far less than the number announced.

The “Aksi 217” demonstration would be larger than previous protests, said Igun, who added that the rally was born from the “accumulated disappointment of online drivers” over government inaction that had left their demands unmet.

He singled out the Transportation Ministry, particularly its recent plan to raise on-demand fares by 15 percent, which he called “counterproductive”.

“It must be questioned whether the government sides with the public or with on-demand businesses, because the five basic demands from online drivers have long been ignored,” Igun said.

He said Monday’s protest would also involve other groups affected by on-demand services platforms, including workers, students, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and the general public.
