he number of 'siri', or unregistered Islamic marriages in Solok regency, West Sumatra, is still high as many couples have yet to obtain their marriage documents as regulated by Law No. 24/2013 on Population Administration.
'Siri' marriages refer to those held according to Islamic law, which are religiously valid but not registered with the state and thus not officially recognized.
"Marriage documents are the basis for the issuance of other population documents including for their children," the Solok Civil Registry and Demography Agency (Disdukcapil) head, Musfian said on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Marriage documents are needed to issue birth certificates otherwise the certificates will only list the mother's name instead of both parents.
"Although the documents can be issued, the absence of the names of both parents will become a mental burden for the children because their parents' marriages are not acknowledged by the state," Musfian said.
He estimated that there were 2,000 couples who had yet to register their marriages with the state.
The agency will cooperate with the Religious Court and the local office of the Religious Affairs Ministry to conduct a mass 'itsbat' (declaration) session to legalize the marriages in order to issue the marriage documents.
Musfian urged Solok residents who had yet to legalize their marriages to use the opportunity to obtain their marriage documents. He added that there would be facilitation regarding the fees and procedures to obtain the marriage documents. (yln/nvn)
