s many as 46,560 students of junior high schools and their equivalents in Yogyakarta are sitting the national exams from Monday through to Thursday.
'There were no problems facing the national exams, starting from the exam paper distribution process to the implementation of the exams. Overall, today's national exams have run smoothly,' Yogyakarta Education, Youth and Sport Agency head Baskoro Aji said on Monday.
The 46,560 students sitting the exams are from 506 junior high schools and 15 schools for children with disabilities or Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB). There are 40 disabled students, including five blind students and five low-vision (lovi) students, participating in the exams.
'We give an additional 40 minutes for students with special needs to work on their exams,' said Baskoro.
The exams in Yogyakarta are conducted in 451 schools. Meanwhile, students from 70 schools must sit the exams in other schools due to various reasons. Two schools, for instance, are not allowed to hold a national exam as they don't have a minimum of 20 exam participants required.
Bebianda Safitri, a female student from junior high school SMPN 2 Sanden, Bantul, had to sit the exam in a ward of Penembangan Senopati Regional Hospital (RSUD), Bantul regency, as she was being treated for typhoid.
'From our observations, overall the national exams have run safely and smoothly,' said Bantul regent Sri Suryawidati when she visited Bebianda at the hospital. She added that two students in Bantul had not attended the exams, as they had died in traffic accidents. (gda/ebf)
