T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is planning to question Syaerozi Dhimyati, the former haj technical affairs chief for the Religious Affairs Ministry for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, about his knowledge of the haj graft case.

"He will be investigated as a witness to our suspect Suryadharma Ali,'€ KPK spokesman Priharsa said on Wednesday, as reported by kompas.com.

In May, former religious affairs minister Suryadharma resigned from his post after being named a suspect in the graft case.

Suryadharma allegedly embezzled funds allocated for the 2012-2013 haj program worth Rp 1 trillion ($84 million) for personal use.

Anggito Abimanyu also resigned in May from his position as the ministry's director general for the haj and umrah (minor pilgrimage) after the KPK expanded its probe into his alleged role in the case.

Priharsa explained that the KPK would ask Syaerozi for a written statement, as his former position would have granted him access to information about the alleged graft case, as reported by kompas.com.

On Monday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appointed United Development Party (PPP) politician Lukman Hakim Saifuddin as the new religious affairs minister. (fss)
