The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) rose 0.23 percent in the opening trading session on Friday.
"A technical factor drove the JCI higher this morning. The market players began to buy shares which fell in price on Thursday," Asjaya Indosurya Securities' analyst William Surya Wijaya said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The index opened 11.29 basis points higher at 4,875, with the index of the 45 most liquid stocks up 0.27 percent to 822.77.
William said amid market instability investors tended to buy shares as a short-term strategy.
Samuel Sekuritas' analyst Aiza said gains recorded by some regional markets contributed to positive sentiment to the domestic market.
Regional exchanges such as Hang Seng and Nikkei recorded an increase, with the Straits Times falling. (hhr)
