n Australian surfer, Peter James Alexander Maynard, 46, has mysteriously gone missing from Nusa Lembongan island in Bali. Police are investigating the case.

Nusa Penida Police chief Comr. Nyoman Suarsika said that Maynard had been staying at Nusa Indah Bungalow in Jungut Batu village on Nusa Lembongan island in Klungkung regency, Bali.

'€œWe were informed that he checked in on Aug. 23 and should have checked out on Aug. 28. However, the guest did not check out and all his belongings are still in the hotel room,'€ Suarsika said.

Maynard was vacationing alone.

'€œWhen we checked the hotel room, all his belongings were still in the room. Including a Canon 500D camera, iPad, iPod, glasses, bag, surfboard, cell phone, two pairs of shoes, T-shirts, shorts and a towel.

'€œHis wallet was also found containing Rp 3,429,000 [US$291] cash. We also found his passport in the room,'€ Suarsika said.

Suarsika said that police had questioned the hotel owner and two members of hotel staff.

'€œThey said that he was seen several times in the hotel, mostly looking relaxed. They had seen him go surfing only once,'€ he said.

'€œThe hotel key was found at the front office desk, but the hotel staff were not sure when the guest had put the key there,'€ he said.

Suarsika said that the hotel staff reported the last time they had seen Maynard was on Aug. 26, when he had breakfast in the restaurant.

'€œAccording to the staff, he looked fine at that time. There was nothing suspicious,'€ he added.

Suarsika said a search had been conducted involving all the community on Lembongan island.

'€œWe have been searching with the whole community on Lembongan. We also coordinated with all the business owners in the Lembongan area, the boat operators and all stakeholders. We haven'€™t been able to find him yet.'€

  • He did not check out from Nusa Indah Bungalow in Jungut Batu village and his belongings were still intact

The police have no idea how Maynard came to be missing.

'€œIf he had an accident at sea, someone around the beach should have known. If he went surfing, he would have taken his surfboard. If he went diving, he must have rented diving equipment from one of several dive operators here in Lembongan. But he has not done any of this. This is mysterious. We will keep doing our best to find him,'€ Suarsika said.

Suarsika said that the case had been reported to the Australian consulate in Denpasar.

'€œHis family arrived from Australia in Bali tonight [yesterday], and will go to Nusa Lembongan tomorrow [today],'€ he said.

'€œYes, an Australian guest has gone missing. He checked in on Aug. 23 and should have checked out on Aug. 28. But he never checked out. All his stuff is still in his room. That'€™s why we reported it to the police,'€ said hotel reception staff, Komang Artana.

Nusa Lembongan is one of three small islets off Bali'€™s southeast coast known collectively as Nusa Penida. The island is a well-known tourist destination.

'€œWe are informed that he checked in on Aug. 23 and should have checked out on Aug. 28. However, the guest did not check out and all his belongings are still in the hotel room.'€
