outh Korea's Incheon Airport is set to cooperate with Indonesia's state airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I (AP I) in constructing Terminal 3 of the Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, East Java.
Mina Choi ' president director of PT Mitra Incheon Indonesia, a subsidiary of Incheon International Airport Corporation ' said the firm provided consulting services to the Juanda Airport operator for commercial development and customer service at the airport's terminals 1 and 2.
'Since the demand is huge in Juanda, we are also discussing future development, because Juanda is also planning to develop Terminal 3,' Choi told The Jakarta Post recently.
'We are currently providing consultancy for Angkasa Pura I and II, but of course we see future development opportunities, just as we see investment opportunities,' she said.
AP I, which manages airports in the eastern part of the country, is scheduled to build its third terminal at Juanda next year as an addition to newly built Terminal 2, on which construction was finished last year.
AP I corporate secretary Farid Indra Nugraha said on Thursday that for the third terminal, the firm was currently carrying out a study on the acquisition of land, part of which belonged to the Navy.
'We should initially discuss the expansion plan with the Navy, as well as Bappeda [Regional Development Planning Board], since this is a very sensitive issue,' Farid told the Post.
'We will further discuss the development plan with Incheon by the time we secure permission,' he continued.
The first phase of the construction of the third terminal will be carried out on 150,000 meters of land before expanding another 150,000 m in the second phase of development.
Concurrently, the operator is planning to extend the airport's runway from the current 3,000 m to 3,600 m.
The expansion is expected to be the answer to the increasing number of flights at the airport, Farid said.
'I estimate that Juanda Airport will accommodate 405,910 flights with 74.2 million passengers by 2030.'
In 2013, the airport served 139,260 flights with 17.68 million passengers.
Incheon Airport is also currently cooperating with PT Angkasa Pura II, which is in charge of managing airports in the country's west, for the commercial division of the country's main gateway, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, in Cengkareng, west of Jakarta.
With the help of Incheon, AP II is planning to open shopping arcades at the airport's Terminal 2 to boost revenue.
Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, is one of the largest and busiest airports in Asia, handling more than 40 million passengers annually.
The hub serves as home to 80 airlines and connects travelers to 193 destinations worldwide.
The airport recently received its ninth consecutive award for being the Best Airport Worldwide by the Airport Council International.
