The Indonesian beach volleyball team headed home empty handed on Tuesday, with its coach blaming the failure to win a medal on his team lacking the clinical touch.

'€œThey lacked a finishing touch. The remedy for this is to play as many as tournaments as possible,'€ coach Slamet Mulyono said on Tuesday while waiting for the bus at the athletes village, which would take the squad to Incheon International Airport.

The badminton team, which won two gold and silver medals for Indonesia, was on the same flight.

'€œWe had the chance when Ina [Indonesia] 2 defeated Qatar,'€ he said, referring to Indonesia'€™s second pairing of Dian Putra Santoso and Fahriansyah.

The Indonesian pair beat Brazilians Tiago de Santos and Jefferson Santos Pereira, who were naturalized to play for Qatar, 11-21, 21-19, 17-15 to advance to quarterfinal where they were beaten by fellow Indonesians Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro and Ade Candra Rachmawan.

However, Koko and Candra could not keep their winning run going and lost to a Chinese pair in a closely fought semifinal match, in which they won the first game before going down in the next two games.

'€œOur tactics worked. We had control in the second game to lead early. But after 7-3, their confidence deserted them, which allowed the Chinese pair to even the score. We became too cautious,'€ Slamet said.

Koko and Candra lost to Chen Cheng and Li Jian 21-15, 20-22, 13-15.

Looking ahead, Slamet turned to the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

The Olympics will feature 24 teams, 16 of which are taken from the world championship series.

'€œWe will not join the world championship series because of a lack of funds. But we will try to have a shot through zonal championship,'€ he said.

While medal chances in Rio are meager, the next Asian Games in Jakarta, according to Slamet, will be a good opportunity for Indonesia to make amends for its Incheon flop.

'€œWe hope funds are available to support our preparation,'€ he said, adding that the volleyball organization had prepared younger athletes as a backup for senior players.
