he Yogyakarta City Tourism and Culture Office willagain hold the inter-district Ketoprak Festival from Oct. 20 to 26 at thePendopo Tamansiswa. Ketoprak is traditional Javanese historical theater.
'The festival was held a few years ago, but not on a regular basis. It alternates with the Wayang Orang Festival, using funds from the provincial budget,' said Suparna, the head of the cultural heritage and arts preservation department at the Yogyakarta Tourism and Culture Agency.
According to Suparna, each district will showcase its own ketoprak group at the festival and each troupe will receive Rp 17.7 million (about US$1,540) for costumes and other necessities.
The event will award prizes totalling Rp 50.1 million to the best group, director, makeup artist and actor.
Suparna added that two dance troupes would perform each day for the duration of the festival, with the first performance starting at 7:30 p.m. Each troupe is allotted 75 minutes to perform.
The organizing committee, he added, would not restrict the performances to the stage. The committee had, however, imposed age restrictions for attendees
