ublic Housing and Settlements Minister Maruarar “Ara” Sirait has canceled the plan to build 18-square-meter subsidized houses after listening to public feedback.
“Today, first we offer an apology. I have an idea and perhaps it is not appropriate. But the intention was good,” Ara said during a working meeting with House of Representatives Commission V overseeing transportation and infrastructure on Thursday, as reported by kompas.com.
“We also learned that ideas in the public domain must be better regarding smaller subsidized houses.”
Ara further said that the idea of building 18-sq m subsidized houses was inspired by young people living in cities. It is often difficult for them to buy houses because the land is too expensive, so the intended solution was to lessen the area required.
“The goal was as simple as that. But I have listened to so much feedback, including from members of House Commission V. So, I offer my apologies, and [have] canceled the idea,” he said.
The plan for the 18-sq m subsidized homes is stipulated in a draft ministerial decree on the limits of land area, building area and subsidized house prices.
In the draft decree, the housing ministry prepared two type alternatives, the 18/25, which has an area of 18 sq m constructed on 25 sq m, and the 18/30, or with an area of 18 sq m on 30 sq m of land.
