Ignasius Jonan seen as the right man to improve RI'€™s transportation

T

he Indonesian National Air Carriers Association (INACA) has expressed its optimism that new Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan will be able to improve the country'€™s infrastructure, given his success with state-owned train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).

'€œHe is a professional who understands public transportation issues. Even though he has yet to prove himself in the land, air and sea transportation sectors, we believe he will be able to manage these three sectors well in the future,'€ INACA secretary-general Teuku Burhanuddin said Monday in Jakarta as quoted by kontan.co.id.

Jonan took over the helm of PT KAI in 2009, since when he has overseen a number of breakthroughs.

In the air transportation sector, Teuku said the new minister needed to change some regulations that were a burden on operators, including the high taxation of aircraft spare parts.

Separately, acting Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said he appreciated President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's decision, adding that he had chosen the right man to develop Indonesia's transportation sector.

Ahok said Jonan was also welcome to work together with the Jakarta city administration to combat the capital'€™s traffic congestion.

'€œThis [Jonan's appointment as transportation minister] is what I had hoped for and I am looking forward to working with him,'€ Ahok was reported bykompas.com as saying at City Hall.

Given his experience in managing PT KAI, Ahok said that he and Jonan would be on the same page in terms of upgrading rail transportation to reduce the use of private vehicles in Jakarta.

'€œCommuter lines are the most crucial mass transportation that we need to develop to reduce the traffic jams,'€ the former East Belitung regent added. (nfo)(+++)
