osta Rica plans to open an embassy in Jakarta, as part of its plan to relaunch its "Trans-Pacific strategy", 28 years after establishing formal relations with Indonesia.
Costa Rican deputy foreign minister Alejandro Solano Ortiz met with Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi on Tuesday in Jakarta to discuss an array of issues, including the potential opening of a Costa Rican embassy, as well as a planned East Asian-Latin American foreign ministers summit which will be held in the Costa Rican capital San Jose in August this year.
The Foreign Ministry notes that the Central American nation views Indonesia as having a very crucial role in the region.
"Both sides have welcomed the idea to hold the first bilateral consultation forum between Indonesia and Costa Rica through the Forum of East Asia and Latin America Cooperation [FEALAC] summit. Talks on disaster mitigation methods will be further explored," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement obtained by The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
Ortiz's visit is the second visit of a Costa Rican official to Indonesia after Foreign Minister Enrique Castillo visited Indonesia in 2013. Castillo's visit was the first visit by a Costa Rican official to Indonesia since both counties established official diplomatic relations in 1985.
Economically, both sides also agreed on strengthening trade and investment, specifically in the biofuel, ecotourism and plantation sectors. Indonesian scholarships can also help strengthen socio-cultural ties between the two developing nations. (dyl/nfo)(++++)
